Apple Music Replay Redesign

Roles:UI/UX Designer, Front-End Developer, Interaction Designer, Data Visualizer
Tech Stack: HTML/CSS, JavaScript, React.js, Node.js, Python

Project Summary:
The Apple Music Replay Redesign reimagines how users experience their annual music summary transforming it from a static list into a rich, interactive storytelling journey.
Inspired by analog music formats like vinyl records and turntables, the redesign introduces scroll-based interactivity, personalized insights, and nostalgic visual cues to help users reconnect with their listening habits in a more dynamic way.

The redesign focuses on making Replay feel less like a stats dashboard and more like a personalized music keepsake, emphasizing story over spreadsheets.

Problem Space:
Apple Music Replay offers useful data but it’s presented with minimal visual or emotional engagement. Users passively consume stats without much excitement or context. Unlike Spotify Wrapped, which leans into narrative design and bold interaction, Apple Music’s recap feels purely informational.

Goal:
Make listening data feel like a story, not a spreadsheet

Improve emotional engagement and shareability

Bring cohesion between Apple Music’s modern UI and the nostalgic, analog vibe of music history

Build a functional, interactive prototype using front-end web tools

Design Process:
Research & Competitive Analysis:
  • Studied Spotify Wrapped, YouTube Music Recap, and other annual summaries
  • Evaluated Apple’s design system for visual and motion patterns
  • Identified user desires through informal feedback (e.g. Reddit threads, app reviews): personalization, motion, depth

Concept Development:
  • Created moodboards around vinyl, retro audio equipment, and physical music rituals
  • Sketched out progression logic (e.g. scroll = spin = progress)
  • Defined key data categories to visualize: genres, albums, songs, hours, artists

Wireframes & Layout Design:
  • Mapped out a vertical scroll format that mirrors the act of “flipping through” a record collection
  • Designed modular cards for each insight (e.g. top artist → record spinning → hover reveals albums)

Visual Design:
  • Chose a warm color palette with soft gradients and grain for tactile feel
  • Used minimalist typography that balances Apple’s sleek UI language with nostalgic undertones
  • Incorporated vinyl record animations to reinforce the concept of rotation, rhythm, and memory

Prototyping & Build:
  • Used React for component structure
  • Leveraged CSS animations and scroll events to simulate playback feel
  • Used Node.js + Python to mock structured listening data

Key Features:
Animated Record UI:
Data appears as the record “spins,” revealing insights one layer at a time

Genre Mood Rings:
Circular bar graphs map dominant genres and their duratio

Dynamic Transitions:
Scroll triggers micro-interactions and data reveals

Album & Artist Spotlights:
Personal highlights appear with hoverable visual overlays

Outcome:
The final concept brings warmth, motion, and personalization to Apple Music’s static Replay experience. It repositions data as narrative and memory, rather than mere metrics. If implemented, this redesign could foster stronger user retention, social sharing, and emotional investment in the platform.
